Goodbye Windows 10.
Hello Windows 8.1 - again.
I'm sorry I abused you so often and wished you were XP (I still do).
Some people leave footprints on our heart. Cats leave fur on our sweaters. Dogs leave drool on our shoes. Families will crap on our doorstep. So when life gives you crap, garden it and make roses.

I'm here hiding from IE8.
I still don't know what is going on with Internet Explorer and Google and why I've been locked out of Blogger for weeks.
So, GoogleChrome was downloaded again from FileHippo because I couldn't sign in to blogger from anywhere. It didn't matter because I can't sign in to Google Chrome either.
Firefox was still on the computer so download all updates and switch browsers. Favourites still had blogs on it from five years ago and I still have to comprehend "synching" favourites from Internet Explorers.
One problem at a time.
I am blogging and I switched off the double word verification. Thank you Google for answering the numerous emails complaining about this. Unfortunately I have to sign in as anonymous because signing in with my google leads to the IE8 message that it can't display the page. So anonymous it is.
Mother is ill. Temperature was 38.5 this morning and she's pulled a muscle in her back which makes breathing very painful. Temp. came down to 37 this afternoon but it's the first time she's asked for the window to be opened for a cooling breeze. Usually she's very cold even on a hot day. She didn't sound great so I pulled on the glad rags and reached out to call a cab when she rang to see if I'd come down. I always know when she needs someone around. Doc Marvin will call in tonight or tomorrow morning and I'll be back there on Wednesday.
Wednesday we start pricing all the white elephant goodies and hopefully it won't rain on Thursday. I've covered 14 note books and diaries and would have finished with 6 covered boxes but I think I'll make do with 4. I'd forgotten how long it takes to do one book let alone 14 of various sizes.
This Firefox takes a bit of getting used to but I did find a lovely green theme with little orange cats so the page pleases me but I'm still going along with IE8 until I can figure out how to import a very long list of sites even after culling a few dead ones along the way.
To Miss O'Dyne, I can't access any of your blogs, IE8 hates both of us.
To Antikva, thank you for trying to help the extremely computer illiterate. I still can't understand how I can be on the phone with you up country, me in Cheltenham but you roaming around in my computer telling me which buttons to press. I've been to places in this computer that I didn't know existed. Creepy little programs running in the background but fortunately no viruses but plenty of tracking cookies which are now languishing in the virus vault.
I was wondering why I hadn't had any accounts from Mum's pharmacy for this year, Gmail decided they were all spam and chucked them in the bin along with Taste.com and a load of delicious cakes. The worst thing that ever happened to our Blogger.com was Google taking over. If I wanted a facebook type blog I'd be on facebook so stick that up your little netcrawlers looking for illicit mentioning of your Google name.

Why am I still sitting like a frog on a log?
Simply because I've been so used to waiting waiting waiting for pages to load that I don't realize it already has.
One problem from last night, not from the connection but the fact that I confused the poor Telstra boy so much he forgot to swipe the card and while I'm telling him the connection is working well, he's telling me I haven't paid for it and he's about to get fired.
So it was walk to the bus, sunny and almost warm, get out at Cheltenham and drop off the rest of the gemstones for testing, have coffee, catch another bus to Southland and stagger round to Telstra. It's been a long time since I had a male of any age almost throw himself at my feet.
3/4 of an hour later after three of them tried to fix up the account and swipe the card, I was free.
I looked at the movies since I was already there but not one good viewing at Gold Class and Prince of Persia was on at the Europa and the seats are a little snug in that theatre. Everything
else started too late so I took the money and blew it on lunch and a very large glass of wine.
And while I'm doing all that, Jules took the country. And I was so looking forward to referring to Kevin O'Lemon until the election. On the upside, I'll probably go back to voting Labor, sorry Greens but you'll be second on my list.
So I am home and ready to play with my new toy and blank. Computer still wants to play dial-up
and it's taken me a while to figure everything out. I just disconnect not take the little stick off the cord thingy. I am not good with electrical things.
Which brings me back to the beginning, sitting like a frog on a log waiting for pages to load.
And yes, The Age is ghastly with sound, I went straight over to ABC news which keeps its gob shut.
Redheads Rule.

Back as soon as I get broadband
Current download speed is 12kbps and that's after spending half an hour with the Peter Sellers Memorial call Centre who assured me that my down load speed was working fine on their end.
Now going out tomorrow to do a deal with Telstra about broadband and telling Optusnet to get stuffed. Of course, I might have to do that with Telstra as well which means posting from the first internet cafe I find.
I blame the World Cup, Tony Abbot, Kevin the Lemon and the Solstice vibes, they're all bad.

MY PRECIOUSSSSS ONE
Okay so it's goodbye to broadband and welcome back to pre-paid dial-up.
Thank you Technicalities service man who cleaned up the desktop which was overheavy with anti-virus programs fighting like gladiators at the arena. He also upped the memory to 1GB (it's old and only had 256MB) and got rid of a load of processing stuff going on behind the scenes.
He was here for over an hour and explained a lot of what was going on and it cost $253.00 The best thing was I didn't have to leave the house.
I didn't feel right about the Optusnet deal so I rang and cancelled that. Mother will have $30 on her phone for emergencies and I will ring her. She said to add up the mobile costs on my phone and take it out of her bank account if I'm stretched. Good idea.
She's feeling a lot better because they're trying out pain patches on her arms instead of slow release morphine pills. Only a few weeks to go before the diamond encrusted wheelchair arrives and I write the big cheque. She is dreaming of me being able to wheel her to Mentone, to shop and have coffee.
Her dream, my nightmare.

NEVER MIND THE CHILDREN, THINK OF DIAL-UPPERS
I have been handcuffed to the computer for three days because of the snail speed of dial-up with seems to be getting slower. River sent me a program for removing Trojans which took 3 hours to download and messed up every other 'anti' program I had running. It was a good 'anti', River but I think it was too shiny for this old dear.
Microsoft kept trying to install IE8 every time I logged on. Adware wouldn't load updates and took 3 hours to scan the computer. AVG wouldn't load updates and took 5 hours to do a complete scan of everything. Spybot wouldn't load updates but only took 40 minutes to scan.
Total low grade infections/tracking cookies found, ten.
ZoneAlarm is working well. CCleaner is working well.
I've had all those on the computer for four years with updates but anything I try now seems to take forever to download, install and scan. The programs fight with each other, like kids in a sandbox.
I like XP, it's simple, functional, no frills and like a comfy pair of slippers. More to the point, I can work it, just.
It's the speed I'm having problems with. I just bought my Harry Potter ticket over the internet and it took 35 minutes to load all the pages I needed. It could have been less if I hadn't decided to change my seat and had to do everything all over again. Who'd have thought Gold Class would have been booked out until July 22? I was trying to avoid the popcorn munchers and drink slurpers so hopefully they won't be in the 10.30 session.
I realize I'm tempting fate but if there's a death in the family, I'm still going.
