PIGS IN RUNDLE STREET, ADELAIDE

Davo took his camera to Adelaide for a short break and photographed the sculptures in Rundle Street. I fell in love with these bronze pigs so in the tradition of great bloggers, I've stolen them from him.
You can see them in Rundle Mall at the junction of Stephens Place. The sculptor was Marguerite Derricourt.
They were commissioned by the Adelaide City Council and unveiled by Former Lord Mayor (Dr. Jane Lomax-Smith) on 3 July, 1999.

This is Oliver, at the bin

This is Horatio, sitting

Truffles is the standing pig behind Horatio, Oliver at the bin and missing is Augusta, the trotting pig.

My social worker niece (masters degree in gossip) is coming to see me this weekend. She's a big-paid lecturer now, in matters sociological: Home and Away without the ads. Meanwhile the Dancing Dog Cafe is the key to it all: Cloud nine and the man in the street.

They probably wouldn't allow them in Britain, Witchy. Health and Safety bollocks and all that. You get fined if you fart in public nowadays. Mind you, some of these old biddies' farts are a bit on the powerful side...

I love those pigs, but I'd forgotten their names. Even forgot they HAD names. I took pictures of them myself a while ago when I was out and about taking photos of Adelaide to send to a friend blogger in Tasmania. When i first heard there were going to be bronze pigs in the mall I thought they'd be horrible, but when I finally saw them I loved them immrdiately.

Andrew--the "rubbish" that Oliver is eating from the bin is also bronze-part of the sculpture.

I also have photos of some of the wall art (murals) painted on one of the little alley like side streets running off Hindley street. If you'd like to see them, you could email me your email address and I'll send them to you. I don't know who did the artwork or what it signifies, I just liked it enough to photograph and send to friends.

River, they had a competition to name the pigs. My mail is in the profile, you don't have one but I'd love to see the rest.

Andrew, have you seen the bronze sculptures in Melbourne standing on the street corner as though they're going to cross the road? I liked them but the pigs are better.

Rh, apparently these days you don't have to have skill to play for Collingwood, just be a good liar. 'masters degree in gossip', I'm going to put that in the poolroom.

Fleetwood, you're going to have to get treatment for this old biddy fetish you have unless you come to Melbourne and there are numerous old blogging biddies that would welcome you with open arms. (arms I said, Sedgwick)

I cannot bear to see ham or bacon in supermarkets. Pigs are intelligent and clean.

Piggy wiggy woos!
Love those sculptures; only reason Melb hasn't got some is because we'd mistake them for the tax-funded slackers in Spring st :P

My daughter has to pat each one every time we're in the Mall. I'll be there this arvo, so I've give all three a pat for you and for her.

How different...maybe they should put them outside Parliament house and call them pigs with snouts in the trough......or call them "homeless"...

Rh, they were lying to save their inflated salaries, a bit like CEO's.

Bwca, I still want the concrete sheep I saw at Reitman's. It was so real and I wasn't game to ask the price.

Lucky Oz and Kath getting to see them every day and why hasn't there been a blog post to show them off?

Jayne is right with Therese about Parliament. I think the sculpture is called 'Pigs in Space' or that might have just been my imagination. At least they're recognisable not like some of the modern rubbish Jeff K put up.
