I can't help wondering if the Australian government's going to end up having to hold another 'Sorry' day at some point in the future...this time for the way it's treated its gay and lesbian population.

I have to say we're not as bad as most countries. I feel the real reason for the ban is that the Pope is coming for a visit in July and the Gov. doesn't want pink to upset the Holy White and Gold.

R.H. said...

Instead of blaming the Church everytime why don't you try to find out why homophobia is really so widespread. Few people in this country are religious at all, they don't take direction from the Church, it wouldn't change them no matter what the Church said.
Widen your view, don't trot out the same non-thinking rubbish, I grew up among poofter-haters who hated religion as well.

R.H. said...

You'll get nowhere just saying 'oh it's the church's fault'.
Be real, ask questions, find out. investigate from both sides what the barrier is. And why there's such huge misunderstanding.

R.H. said...

In my days on the streets of St Kilda I found out that even poofter bashers changed their attitude after getting to know some homo, which is the advantage of so many types being stranded up shit creek together. Gays themselves are to blame when they isolate themselves from the mainstream through their own culture, language etc, and even there own part of a city. There's no need to do it.

R.H. said...

One should never act exclusive.

Rh, to quote Dr Martin Luther King Jnr.
"Men hate eath other because they fear each other. They fear each other because they don't know each other. And they don't know each other because they are separated from each other".

Unfortunately Churches who live by words in their Bibles continue to keep homosexuals separate in this world. Not every Church or Church going person is homophobic, it just happens that the ones who are have a great deal of influence and use it to advantage. As for investigating I don't have to go any further than my own extended family to see how young men are destroyed by parents refusing to acknowledge that they are what nature intended them to be.
If they live in a particular area it's because they feel safe there but that's changing along with social attitudes.

Witchy,

I have to agree, fear and ignorance are the two main problems with any form of bigotry...as always. Especially the fear. I remember a conversation with a homophobe some years ago that ran along the lines of:

Peabrain: "Get your backs to the wall lads, there's that brown hatter again."

Me: "Why backs to the wall? Are you worried that he's going to try and bum you in the street? Or just that you might succumb to his wicked wiles?"

"Queer lover! Knob jockey!"

(Fists fly. Genitals get booted. Exit persued by a bear.) Etc.

The Pope's great, isn't he? When you look back through history popes have been the most sexually deviant of the lot of us. One even had to be carried about on his chair because he was riddled with syphallis contracted from underaged male prostitutes. Sad, but true. That's why eventually they decided to make Catholic priests celebate. Didn't quite cure the problem, but it did send it firmly underground...or under the cassock as the case might be.

so many voices persist in praising religion, despite the facts, as do they smoke in spite of evidence that one is a fool to do it.

Last night watching the gay marriage reporting on TV, I was sickened to hear the naysayers claim
"but they won't stay married very long"
- oh fer chrissakes!
Do I assume that these naysayers have such a tiny experience of this society that they have failed to notice the zillions of heterosexual marriages which last 5 minutes?

Lord Sedgwick said...

"the zillions of heterosexual marriages which last 5 minutes?"

... which is double the time most blokes take to exercise their conjugals.

Jayne said...

The pissy arguments against gay marriage are crumbling everywhere and the only thing holding them up are the loud homophobic ignorants shaking big sticks at the govt to keep their status quo.
But like making organ donation the norm, recognising some mental illnesses and legalising gay relationships Australia will always lag behind the rest of the world by at least 20-30 years due to stagnating politicians who're unable to let Australia lead instead of tag behind.

JahTeh said...

I'm not one to kick a priest when he's down but another one bit the dust for kiddy fiddling today.

Anyway I hope you all read the link to Rodney's article. A truly lovely man whom I admire a great deal.

Bwca is so right about the 5 minute marriage, I've just learnt of 4 in this neighbourhood that have gone bust but my gay cousin is coming up to 30 years with his partner.

Jayne, it's all because the ACT act will look too much like a ceremony. How great for friends and family to want a ceremony. Nobody's been struck down by lightning in Tasmania yet.

R.H. said...

You've got a problem, really.
Why not pick on tamperers who aren't priests, school teachers for example? There's plenty of them, and in state schools too.
Paedophiles are impossible to identify when as young men they join the Catholic church. Women don't interest them, that's why they become priests, understand? It's a nice reason for not marrying.

JahTeh said...

Rh, I don't have a problem at all, it's just that the news item was relevent to these comments. I dislike any person who thinks of children as prey especially a person in a position of trust.

R.H. said...

oh yes well I can't be bothered, politicans block gay marriage, that's all, if churches could influence their decisions there'd be no abortion.
Muslims are what gays need to watch out for, not Christians.

JahTeh said...

Unfortunately Rh, anyone who has a religious book can interpret it in their own way for their own ends. I'm not particularly fond of agressive atheists either. I don't think anyone has the right to impose religious or anti-religious views on other people. Militant vegans get on my wick too. And while I'm at it, I don't like drunks. Moderation and tolerance should be taught as subjects from pre-school to University.

Brian Hughes said...

"And while I'm at it, I don't like drunks."

I make a better drunk than a sober person. I sing a lot and feel compelled to cuddle the cat.

R.H. said...

Yes well I haven't seen any news item about any priest doing anything at all and the only time you do hear about them is when they've made some blunder or other but who cares because everytime I defend the faith I get one step closer to forever and just getting here anyway is a huge jump from that tiny street where I started out so cook that up and serve it!!!!

Fear and ignorance. Two things that seem to be at the root of all evil, the world over.
I too find it ironic that some of the worst pedophiles that ever lived have been protected and hidden behind the church doors, yet they have the nerve to try and tell others how to live.

Lord Sedgwick said...

Jeez (no relation) Steph, are you telling us we shouldn't be listening o the wise words of Archbishop Pell and his ventriloquizal dummy, Tony 'le très fou monk' Abbott?

I thought not. PHWEW!

JahTeh said...

Thank you Steph (patron saint of spiders). Rulers like fear and ignorance in the masses it makes it easy to find scapegoats.

M'Lord is it coincidence that you commented under the luscious pink bedecked knockers of Miss Steph?

I thought not, but how could you contaminate her good name by putting it anywhere near Pell and Abbott.

According to my Ladybird Book of Applied Sociological Tautology: "Bigotry is bigotry whether it's got a towel wrapped round its head or is a celebate bloke in a long black frock. Sometimes bigotry doesn't even need a religion for refuge, relying instead on simple ignorance or cultural memes. The world is never black and white but a host of individual components that make up the various shades of grey. The trouble is, in parts it seems a lot greyer than others."

Maybe RH can show us his blog so we all know how to do it right?

JahTeh said...

Rh, did you actually read the link before you embarked on your holy crusade? There are religions everywhere who hate gays, snake talkers in Louisianna hate gays, the Dalai Llama doesn't like them and I'm sure I could turn up a coven of dark witches who can't stand them.
"Miss Fart-Breath" is a dab hand with a stilleto heel to the side of the head and she's so accident prone we'd all swear she fell over.

Oz, he won't ever have a blog since he'd have a DOS attack from the 'commented on' in the first hour.

Congrats Fleetwood, you resisted taking a shot at Lord boredom.

Lord Sedgwick said...

"Congrats Fleetwood, you resisted taking a shot at Lord boredom."

Hard for Lord Lucan's idiot cousin to take aim when he's legless, twenty-five sheets to the flatulence and subject to an AVO. (Taken out by his long suffering moggy.)

R.H. said...

Darlings people who say they'd never judge entire races or groups because of some baddies are telling lies.
They are liberal, they say, but hate Christians. Golly. Well work it out.
Paedophiles in the Catholic church, whether the church hides them or not, does not turn me from Christ. Nor do 'faith healers'.
We're only people.

R.H. said...

Miss Jahteh the Taliban executes gays. And I'm sure you knew that already.

JahTeh said...

Yes I do Rh, and so do the Saudis, Syrians, Iraqis and Iranians. In Singapore it's a long jail term but Japan tries to deny all knowledge. In Burma, death or the mines. In America they have death by shame, teen suicide is all too common as it is here.

R.H. said...

Stop dodging, you water it down to nationalities, but we're talking about religion. Come on: say it.

I'm sorry to Steph, and lord whatisname, I know I overdid it, but I get offended too.
There's not enough justice in the world, not enough to go around.

Brian Hughes said...

Watch it Sedgwick. I'm not sure what an AVO is, but the only thing the cat's ever taken out against me is a 'compulsory slavery order'.

R.H. said...

An AVO is an Assured Vaginal Obstruction device, favoured by feminists, and women over forty who suddenly become political. Feminists are always political, and never enjoy a root. Woman over forty are sick of it. How astonishing. Yes, but not when you think about it. Darcy in middle-age is a dirty old man.
Toodle-oo darlings, and watch out for the Taliban: Sharia Law. It's Islam you know, full of Koranic scholars.

Knowledge is a dangerous thing, especially among the poor.

Robert,

Cheers for the info. I thought it had something to do with Captain Scarlet's car to be honest.

FYI Mr. Brian Hughes, an AVO is an Apprehended Violence Order, something much needed in this comment thread. No gnomes, no pack drill, but sadly our Robert seems to has gotten the wrong end of his stick again.

JahTeh said...

Robert, my last comment. The whole point of this post was the influence of religious groups to interfer in CIVIL LAWS. I'm not anti-religion for other people, I just don't need it for myself but I would certainly oppose any religious laws becoming the civil laws of my country.

Brian Hughes said...

Setev,

That'd be one of those legal rulings then...such as the one the court took out to prevent you from committing any further grossly indecent public sex acts with the delicious Robillina.
