HALF-WAY TO HEAVEN

This slice of yum is from here and an Order of Australia to whoever thought of creating a blog devoted to finding the best vanilla slice.

Why am I half-way to heaven? Because this particular slice comes from San Sebastian's in Hampton, just a slurp and a drooool from my doctor's office. It's really going to make visiting Hampton a trial. This is just across from my other favourite, the Bohemian Cake Shop.

Decisions, decisions. I shop tomorrow but it's supposed to be hot so do I cab it to Southland or leave early, catch a bus and detour to Hampton first?

I could really do with a treat. Allison Dubois says you should treat yourself and not leave it up to others to make you happy. Checked the weight this morning, 132.7kgs, not good but I haven't put any on so treat it will be. I hope it lives up to the hype, it's a long way for a slice or three.

I love vanilla slices and I don't think I've had one all year. I had better correct that and I've less than a month to go.

I saw an article about a vanilla slice competition. It was delicious-looking. People competed from all over Australia. While they didn't win, I loved the originality of a shop that sold vanilla slices not as squares but as round, tart shaped things, and the tops were not of the usual passionfruit or white icing.

But they were pink. and they were moulded perfectly so they should look like little piggy faces!

Pig-vanilla slices. At least they can make yer laugh, too.

Here is an article about The Great Vanilla Slice Challenge apparently traditionally held in Ouyen. Brainchild of Jeff Kennett who was a big vanilla slice man himself.

I didn't realise we had something so important in common.

Tempting...but not as coy and seductive as a steak and kidney pie from the Crescent Bakers in Thornton Cleveleys.

The shop will stay. Save it for a cooler day and you will enjoy it more.

132 kgs? You're wasting away!

250 is heavy.

EAT! EAT! EAT! Starvation kills you. Food isn't dangerous, it makes the coffin heavier, that's all.

Miss Academic Laura, there are watchers of current affairs shows who've never heard of Jane Austen. And if you get your snooty way they never will.
Grow up, if you and your little colony of blockhead elitists were ever truly democratic you wouldn't be puppies in a Greer manger.

Sweetiepies and assorted darlings if I told you how much I love you it would destroy this entire internet. Let's just say our little world isn't big enough. No language grand enough. Roman Etrusian Greek Egyptian Sumerian!- ruins not testament enough. To my love.

I didn't get my vanilla slice but I got a lot of grief for not answering the phone yesterday. Tears, depression, blame etc.

Andrew, you were quite right, a cooler day is waiting for me.

Hughes, I used to make a glorious steak and kidney pie, rich gravy with a touch or gallon of wine and serve it with potato and swede mash. I have heartburn just thinking of it.

Rh, 'it makes the coffin heavier', I love you sometimes, I'll still laughing.
Have you been upsetting the literary set again? As for Germaine, she is the best teacher I have ever come across. Any programme with her in charge is clear and instructive. She's a lot like you, doesn't suffer fools gladly.

Hazelblackberry, do they have vanilla slices in W.A? I thought it was an east coast thing. What about the pastries in Paris?

Morgana, they're about the only sweets treats I haven't had success with which is just as well.

Maria, the image of round tart shaped things which were pink didn't bring piggy faces to my mind. Vanilla slices are about the only thing Jeff and I had in common too.

Oooh!! Vanilla slices! Haven't had one in ages. I like the ones from Swiss Glory here in Adelaide. I'll be in the city on the weekend so I think I'll make that my first stop.

Why do I get the feeling I'm single-handedly fueling the obesity crisis in Australia?
River, it must have vanilla icing, not pink or passionfruit although I'd go for all three myself.

I'd never want to be known as someone who doesn't suffer fools, because I do. And I've been a fool myself lots of times. So I try not to be arrogant vain and hypocritical too often.
But Germaine Greer is never wrong. Sociology knows everything. And it just lays me out to see intelligent people shove aside common sense to believe this crap.

They have vanilla icing with those fancy pink stripes like this }}}} and the custard is really soft and creamy.

Usually a comment like that River would have me slavering but yesterday I had sticky date cake with fresh caramel sauce and creme fraiche and ice-cream. It was out of this world.

Rh, we only get views of Germaine by newspapers or tv interviewers looking for the contraversial and she always gives it to them. I still say you would get on well with her if you ever met.

Vanilla slices yummy...They are the best...haven't had one for ages...must remedy that...thanks for reminding me about them

Therese, not you too. All I see before me are expanding derrieres but at least I won't be lonely.

And that should be controversial, eating sticky date cake wrecks my spelling.

Thanks for dropping by the Vanilla Slice Blog, I hope you do get to sample that particular one. I'm having a lot of fun with the shots and the write ups. Our group -
The Custard Crusaders - aim was to post once a week but some of our crew have been away and it is difficult to control the weight gain even with a weekly dose - LOL! I'm now just eating a half portion.

I have posted a new review today and have another in the pipeline too. If you have a favourite, I hope you'll leave a comment on our 'Tell us where to go' page. Cheers and thanks for the compliment!

Stickyfingers, if you're down Mentone way, try 'Truly Scrumptious' in Granary Lane for the sticky date cake I mentioned. This is my equal favourite and they serve it beautifully, expensive but worth every mouthful.
