This is the same undersea eruption off the Island of Tonga, one year later. Geologists and vulcanologists are waiting to see if the eruption continues to form a stable island.
This is the view from sea level. While the ash fall has wiped out vegetation and animal life on an uninhabited island nearby, this will be the beginning of a new land form if the debris consolidates before any storm or wave action breaks it down.
