This is huge. The red dust storm is seen on the horizon as it approaches ships in the area of north-western Australia
The sand and dust had been picked up by strong winds in the Indian Ocean and looked like a tsunami as it approached ships which had been sitting on a calm sea
Wind gusts reached 63mph in Onslow but a climate information office said dust storms were rare and may only happen once or twice a year, if at all.

The third photo is truly scary.
They are all pretty scary. Aaaargh.
I had a quick glimpse of the third photo when it appeared on my opening Yahoo page, then my computer crashed and I forgot about it.
Is the dust storm still out there? Coming our way? Are we in danger of having to dust more than once a day? (week/month/year)
Andrew, remember that race day when the dust cloud came over Flemington? My sister was there and she said it really was frightening while it lasted.
EC, my cousin, the scientist, has seen the computer modelling for future climate and he says we're for it if we can't change now.
River, it's all gone, over and done with.
Fast and frightening but we're going to see more of this sort of strange weather.
Are they for real.....?
If so, the photographer should get a medal for not soiling himself or running away screaming!
Kath, a bit like 'nits on a plane' he had nowhere to go, he was on a tugboat, at sea, fortunately with a camera.
