It seems the sun chucked a wobbly last week and earth copped the fallout of electrons, protons and ions.
Most of the cloud passed over us but the magnetosphere managed to get a share and in the high northern latitudes had a spectacular showing of auroras.

A more powerful solar flare occurred yesterday so we'll have more brilliant photographs in the next week.

yes yes all very beautiful but why do I think that the most glorious lightshow ever, is the one right before planet Sun explodes ... in the same way that surfing photographers think the best shot they ever get is the one before the board hits them in the forehead.

EC, we're supposed to be able to see the aurora down south if there's no cloud and if we're awake at the right time. Next year is the solar maximum flare event.

MM, did you see that mad aussie surfer riding the huge wave in Tahiti? I think we'll be long gone before the Sun flips the switch. Back to that surfer, all the others get a tow out behind the breaking wave but he paddled out himself, completely nuts. The wave looked like the Great Wall of China.
That's a beautiful image, almost like an angel watching over us.
River, they're variously calling it the eagle or the phoenix. I like phoenix myself.
Wow...I know it causes all sorts of problems when this happens - hopefully not too big. its beautiful though
